Definition : an earthquake or tremor is a ground shaking resulting from the sudden release of energy accumulated by the stresses exerted on the rocks. This release of energy occurs by breaking along a fault, usually pre-existing.

An earthquake can have four origins:

• Rupture of a fault or fault segment: tectonic earthquakes
• Intrusion and degassing of magma: volcanic earthquakes
• he "cracking" of the ice caps echoing in the earth's crust: polar earthquakes
• Explosion, collapse of a cavity: earthquakes of natural origin or due to human activity

Many earthquakes occur every day but most are not felt by humans. Approximately one hundred thousand earthquakes are recorded every year on the planet.
